how can we work on the housing crisis, but also have a hecking great time?
working in teams, partnerships and 2-to-1 volunteers for roles makes everything more social & builds resilience for us to work with more flexibility/humanly
different working groups work in seasons, online & in-situ (eg. around student term timetable/ around various project checkpoints), with space and flex for busy and quiet periods
homefolk from day one has operated on a strict no-burnout policy & we see our healthy community as an equal priority to healthy (tinyhome) community as our ends
as legal volunteer ben put it, "what makes homefolk unique is our working culture; and a strong emphasis on looking after our own mental health"
if we're going to try and solve the housing crisis, it's essential we have fun doing it :)
we've had over 100 casual and regular volunteers since our inception, doing work on everything from PR, specialist architecture & legal work to web design and film editing
with each new step along our journey, we've identified how new volunteering roles can help us get to our goal: a new model for affordable housing
read on below to discover current volunteering opportunities. *legal and arch & design teams not actively recruiting
the policy & research team at homefolk is where the brains meet the big-hearted changemakers π§Ύπ‘ they're the ones turning good vibes into real-life systemsβdigging into housing laws, dreaming up people-first policies, and backing it all with solid research. whether it's decoding planning regs, writing punchy policy briefs, or making sure our homes are backed by evidence, theyβre all about making tiny homes a big deal in the right places π‘π powered by purpose, spreadsheets and principles
the strategy team at homefolk is a space where big dreamers answer big questions π§ β¨ they're the crew who help us zoom out and plot the path from one tiny home to thousands (no pressure, right?). we huddle up to chat big picture stuffβlike how we grow, who we team up with, and how we keep things kind, green and grounded. think of them as the compass that keeps homefolk pointed towards a future where everyoneβs got a cosy, affordable place to call home π‘π
the creative & fundraising team at homefolk is where the magic happensβpaintbrushes, poetry, pixels and all π¨π« they're the storytellers, vibe curators, and beauty-bringers who make our mission feel like something you wanna be part of. from dreamy visuals to heartfelt campaigns, they turn love into action (and donations!) ππΈ whether theyβre screen-printing tote bags, crafting zines, or designing events that feel like a warm hug, theyβre the soulful spark keeping homefolk funded
the coms & social team at homefolk are our digital storytellers π±π they keep the vibes strong onlineβsharing updates, sparking convos, and making sure our mission feels warm, real, and worth following β¨π¬
the community advocacy team at homefolk is all about listening loud and lifting voices ππ they chat with neighbours, gather stories, and make sure everything we do is rooted in real-life needs. from surveys to storytelling to standing up for housing justice, they keep us grounded, people-powered, and pushing for change together π‘β
our legal group in-situ at Glasgow university has made great progress over the last 3 years on business setup, compliance and our legal 'sandwich' ownership model. current legal resources meet our needs - based on experience, we are open to, but not actively seeking additional volunteers until sept 2025. for exploring organisational collaboration, please do email us
2024 was a great year: thanks to the Sheffield university 'live projects' module, in addition to the ASCA design colab., current arch & design resources exceed our needs - based on experience, we are open to, but not actively seeking additional volunteers until sept 2025. for exploring organisational collaboration, please do email us
if you've read the information above on our working groups currently open to new volunteers and what being part of our community is like, and you still want to get involved, click to our sign-up form below
